This year, we are proud to announce four distinct scholarship opportunities designed to honor the legacies of incredible educators and mentors while providing financial and material support to students in California, Florida, and across the nation.
Whether you are a storyteller behind a lens, a future leader in Compton, or a student dedicated to the art of communication, we have a path for you.
1. The Joshua James Memorial Photography Scholarship
Focus: Visual Storytelling & Artistry
In loving memory of Joshua James, a dedicated photography teacher who inspired countless students, this scholarship nurtures the next generation of visual storytellers. Rather than a cash prize, this award provides the actual tools of the trade.
- The Award: A professional Digital Camera Package (DSLR Camera, Lens, Bag, and Tripod).
- Eligibility: High School Seniors or College Students (Freshman–Senior) majoring in Photography.
- Deadline: Tuesday, June 2, 2026
2. The Tonya James-Gordon Educational Scholarship (California)
Focus: Compton & Los Angeles County Seniors
Established to honor Ms. James-Gordon, a devoted contributor to the Foundation, this scholarship supports students within the Compton Unified School District who are ready to take their next step into higher education.
- The Award: $250.00 (Awarded to one boy and one girl).
- Eligibility: Compton area High School Seniors with a 2.5+ GPA and college acceptance.
- Requirements: A 500–800 word essay on passion, community contribution, or life-changing experiences.
- Deadline: Tuesday, June 30, 2026
3. Dr. Barbara Seniors Harkins Educational Scholarship (Florida)
Focus: South Dade & Miami Seniors
Dr. Harkins was a lifelong educator in the Dade County Public Schools who believed every child deserves a caring and supportive learning environment. This scholarship continues her mission of bettering the conditions for students in Florida.
- The Award: $250.00.
- Eligibility: South Dade/Miami area High School Seniors with a 2.5+ GPA and college acceptance.
- Requirements: A 500–800-word essay reflecting on personal growth and community impact.
- Deadline: Tuesday, June 30, 2026
4. Carla Hairston “Communicate Well” Scholarship
Focus: National / Any Major / Communication Skills
Created by Rev. Carla Hairston, this scholarship emphasizes that effective, others-focused communication is a skill needed in every area of life. This unique award is open to students nationwide, regardless of their major.
- The Award: $500.00 (Minimum of two awards given).
- Eligibility: High school graduates entering college or current college students entering graduate school (2.5+ GPA).
- Special Feature: This scholarship is renewable ($250) in subsequent years with a simple update on your communication progress!
- Deadline: Tuesday, June 30, 2026
