The Foundation hosts three book clubs, for youth ages 6-15. The purpose of our Book Club program is to promote literacy within the youth of the Los Angeles community. Each age group meets once a week to discuss their current book. The discussions are informal with the focal point being the likes and dislikes of that week’s reading and how they can relate to the characters and what they’re experiencing in the book.
2016 – 2017 Book Club
Winter 2017 Update: Our younger readers are preparing to attend the Junie B Jones the Musical. Our Middle School readers are in for a treat: a special screening of the film, “The Lego Movie,” and our teen readers will be Skyping with the author of their current book (“When Smiles Fade”), Paige Dearth.
If you have questions, you can call the Foundation at: (310) 226 – 8441 or e-mail us (firstname.lastname@example.org).
In the meantime, please follow us on social media for more updates!
2015 – 2016 Book Club
Update: July 1, 2016 – That’s a wrap!
Last Tuesday, Book Club wrapped with our end-of-year party, but not before our readers had the opportunity to visit Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, CA. They were able to take a closer look at several animals they read about in “Island of the Blue Dolphins,” which was our Spring Session book. Stay tuned for information regarding Book Club dates for the Fall. Have a great summer!
About Book Club
The Dr. Barbara Seniors Harkins Foundation, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Blazers Youth Organization, sponsors an after school Book Club, for boys and girls, 10-14 years of age.
The purpose of this group is to provide students with an opportunity to read positive books in an informal setting while improving their reading skills.
The Book Club usually begins in the Fall and runs through to the end of the school year, with a break in December between books.
